After serving the neighborhood of Skid Row for 24 years, Best Market transitioned into Skid Row People’s Market, from convenience store to grocery shop with the guiding principles of (1) a safe space for Skid Row community to heal our spirits and develop healthy identities and (2) food is medicine… not only for the body, but also for the soul and the spiritual connection to history, ancestors, and the land” (Winona La Duke).
The opening ceremony was comprised of a walking meditation, brief presentations about food justice in Skid Row, Korean poongul drumming and Jishinbalki by Chamsori friends, and meals by Skid Row Coffee, Big Mama, Susan Park and Mama May Park.
